Caltrans Urges Work Zone Safety After Six Worker Deaths
Caltrans held a press conference in Sacramento on October 8, 2026, urging drivers to slow down and drive safely through highway work zones. Since August 10, six contractor employees working on Caltrans highway projects have been struck and killed across California, including three in a single incident on September 25 in Riverside County.
The agency reminded drivers of California's Move Over law, which requires drivers approaching stopped vehicles displaying flashing warning lights or other warning devices to move over a lane when it is safe, or slow to a safe speed if they cannot change lanes. Caltrans also asked drivers to avoid distractions and never drive impaired.
California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin said that behind every cone, flashing light and worker in a vest is a person doing a critical job in dangerous conditions.
Contractors with crews in active work zones may want to review traffic control plans and reinforce safety briefings with field personnel.
