Caltrans Awards $23.6M In Planning Grants For 58 Local Projects

Caltrans has distributed $23.6 million in planning grants to 58 local projects across California, aimed at climate resiliency, emissions reduction, bicycle and pedestrian safety, and disaster preparedness. The projects emphasize multimodal transportation and improved mobility for under-resourced communities.

Nearly $14 million of the funding comes from SB 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. The remainder is drawn from the State Highway Account, the Federal Highway Administration's State Planning and Research program, and the Federal Transit Administration's Section 5304 grant program.

The grants fund planning and conceptual design work rather than construction itself. For contractors, that means these 58 projects are being moved toward eventual bid-ready status, seeding a future pipeline of local multimodal, safety, and resiliency work statewide.

Caltrans officials framed the awards as helping local leaders design transportation solutions that connect residents to schools, workplaces and community assets.
