A new Public Policy Institute of California survey suggests contractors chasing data center work may face growing community resistance across the state. Of 1,578 adult Californians polled, 73% said they oppose construction of data centers in their communities.

The opposition crosses party lines, with majorities of both Democrats and Republicans disapproving of the projects, though Republicans registered slightly higher opposition, according to the poll.

Data centers have emerged as a significant source of large-scale construction work, driving demand for site development, heavy electrical infrastructure, cooling systems and specialized trades. Widespread public disapproval could translate into tougher local permitting fights and slower project approvals.

For firms bidding or planning to bid this work in California, the results signal a need to anticipate community and political pushback as developers advance new facilities.
