Caltrans Releases Updated Climate Risk and Sea Level Rise Guidance

Caltrans has released its 2026 Climate Change Vulnerability Risk Assessment and updated statewide Sea Level Rise guidance, part of a broader push to protect California highways and communities from extreme weather. The department describes the work as science-based planning aimed at making transportation infrastructure more resilient against climate change.

According to Caltrans, the two efforts serve distinct purposes within the state's climate adaptation strategy and are intended to help prepare for potential impacts of El Nino and other extreme weather events. Each initiative addresses a different aspect of climate adaptation for transportation infrastructure.

Caltrans emphasized planning for extreme weather risks up front and working with local partners to protect vital connections and reduce harm to vulnerable residents. Contractors working on state transportation projects may want to review the updated guidance to anticipate how resiliency requirements could shape future scopes of work.
